Being a Member of the Law Society Council is your opportunity to get directly involved in setting the strategic direction, priorities and policies of your professional body.
Council Members are involved in and exposed to a range of interesting and varied issues such as:
- representing and promoting the Society, its Members and the legal profession on matters affecting the profession and strengthening the community’s understanding of and confidence in the legal profession;
- setting the strategic direction of the Society including approving, monitoring and reviewing strategic plans, strategies and goals; the annual operating budget, and ensuring the Society operates within its not-for-profit purpose;
- determining the position of the Society on issues of policy having substantial actual or potential impact upon the legal profession or a substantial section of it;
- ensuring the adequacy and effectiveness of the Society’s corporate governance structures; and
- approving the annual report, financial statements and other published reporting.
Council Members might expect to commit, on average, a few hours per week to Law Society business, including reading and preparation time. The Council currently meets monthly at 5:15pm on the first Monday of the month, with videoconference attendance permitted, and sits for an average of one to two hours. Additional Council meetings may be called if required.
