Who can stand for election?

Only Financial Members of the Society are entitled to be nominated for/stand for election for positions and vote at elections. Nominations must be signed by two nominees who are Financial Members. Members who wish to nominate or act as a supporter for a nominee should check that their membership subscription for the financial year has been paid.

Associates are not eligible to nominate, act as a nominee for a Member or stand for election for any position.

A Member may be nominated for/stand for election as an Officer of the Society (President-Elect, a Vice President or Treasurer) at the same time as being nominated/standing for election as a Metropolitan Member, Country or Junior Member (as eligible).

If a Member nominates for a position as a Member of Council and also as an Officer and the Member is elected as an Officer, then any purported election as a Member of Council is null and void.

Nominees for the gender based (Vice President and Metropolitan Member) positions must identify with the gender (whether or not they are of that gender or of non-specific gender) of the position for which they nominate (as per definitions of “man” and “woman” in the Rules). There are no gender restrictions for nominators.

Only Members whose principal place of practice is in the Metropolitan District may be nominated for/stand for election as a Metropolitan Member (unless they do not have a principal place of practice, in which case their residential address will determine eligibility).

Only Members whose principal place of practice is in the relevant Country District may be nominated for/stand for election in that Country District (unless they do not have a principal place of practice, in which case their residential address will determine eligibility).

Nominating

The nomination process is being conducted by CorpVote (an independent election provider), via an electronic platform. Members will receive a call for nominations from the Society containing the link to the CorpVote nomination platform.

Nominations must be supported by two Financial Members ("supporters"). It is recommended a Member who intends to nominate approach their proposed supporters and notify them of the position/s for which it is intended to nominate prior to commencing to submit a nomination via the CorpVote Nomination Platform.

As part of the nomination process supporters will be contacted by CorpVote by email and asked to confirm (or otherwise) their support for the nomination.

In submitting a nomination, a candidate must confirm that if they are elected they will comply with the provisions of the Council and Council Member Charter, which is available on the CorpVote Nomination Platform (as a reference document).

Nominations are called for in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Rules of the Society.

Candidates will be required to upload a photograph to the CorpVote Nomination Platform for use in the event there is an election (should they wish to have a photograph included).

Candidates will be asked to complete a Candidate Profile on the Nomination Platform. Candidates will be required to list their areas of professional expertise/interest/involvement and their involvement with the Law Society (if any). Candidates have the option to make a candidate statement and detail the areas of interest which they believe are important to the Society and/or the profession. The Candidate Profile is the basis of information provided to voters in an election, should one be required.

Candidates and supporters will need to provide their Law Society Member No. during the nomination process, for verification purposes.
