Statement - Law Society supports call for investigation into Yatala incident
27 September 2016
The Law Society of SA supports the Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement’s call for an independent investigation into the incident at Yatala Prison involving Mr Morrison, who tragically died in Royal Adelaide Hospital yesterday morning.
“An independent review into the incident should be conducted to examine the Department of Corrections’ procedures relating to the management and medical treatment of inmates,” said Law Society President David Caruso.
“More importantly, loved ones of Mr Morrison deserve answers to questions about how this tragedy occurred.”
“An appropriate response to persons involved in the incident can only be delivered when the full facts of the incident come to light.”
The Law Society also supports the ALRM’s recommendations to establish an independent Aboriginal Visitors Scheme and Custody Notification Service in SA, similar to that which operates in NSW and the ACT.
