Legal Advocacy Pro: Skills for Success

The course is designed as professional development for newly admitted lawyers and experienced lawyers seeking to build on their practical legal training and refresh practical knowledge and skills necessary for representing a client at courts or tribunals. 

The advocacy course includes two full days in person, incorporating teaching as well as preparation and delivery of individualised one-on-one oral presentations with feedback and coaching from a qualified assessor. These personalised assessments ensure focused feedback and tailored guidance for each participant. The in-person days will be held on the 14th & 28th November 2024 at the Law Society and District Court, with the three online modules to be completed at your own pace.

The core topics covered include:

  •      Advocacy Fundamentals and Beyond
  •      Professional Legal Ethics Refresher
  •      Risk Management Refresher
  •      Respectful Advocacy: Managing Bullying and Harassment Challenges Professionally

A minimum of 55 hours is required to complete this course encompassing participation in instructional interactions over the two in-person days, online modules, readings and research.

Key Learning Outcomes for Advocacy Fundamentals and Beyond

On satisfactory completion of this course, participants will have demonstrated:

  • applied understanding of ethics, conventions, and etiquette applicable to lawyers representing a client at a court or tribunal;
  • recognition of the value of preparation and good operating practices for representing a client and for preparing for a trial;
  • capability to prepare and produce a clear and consistent oral and/or written submissions;
  • capability to prepare and perform examination-in-chief and cross-examination of a witness;
  • fundamental skills necessary for presentation of matters at courts and tribunals, and
  • persuasive presentation of a submission grounded in facts, law, and good operating practices and principles.
