CLCs - who, what, where, why and how?
Wednesday, 26 February 2025 | 4:00pm - 5:30pm | In-person only - SOLD OUT!
1 CPD unit (Practice Management / Business Skills)

Presenters: Community Legal Centres SA (Representatives from each CLC)
Natalia Olson, Community Justice Centre
Cheryll Rosales, Uniting Communities Law Centre
Vanessa Ho, WestSide Lawyers
Alexandra Psarras, Women’s Legal Service SA
Stephen Chenoweth, Northern Community Legal Service

This session will cover who the South Australian Community Legal Centres (CLC) are, why they exist and what they do, how CLCs differ from Legal Services Commission SA, and how the various CLCs in SA work collaboratively.  Presenters will discuss the types of issues they deal with the most, the clients they work with and where we they help.  They will speak about funding obligations and how their practice and consideration of matters differs from private practice.

For consideration:
  1. Meeting the client and initial assessment - what should a private practitioner do with a client who has merit but no money?
  2. When the money runs out, is it ethical to place the pressure of finalising a matter on a CLC?
  3. Trauma informed referrals and warm referrals – get to know your local CLCs.
This session will cover ethical considerations of lawyers working in CLC’s and those in private practice.

Presenters will discuss obligations:
  • Division 3B – Provisions relating to community legal centres of the Legal Practitioners Act 1981 (SA)
  • s 16 A of the Australian Solicitor Conduct Rules
  • Legal Practitioners Regulations 2014 (SA)
The panel will answer questions, debunk myths (that they are super-human), simplify the referral process for private practitioners, and provide a snapshot of a ‘day in the life’ of a CLC lawyer.

After the 60-minute CPD presentation, the presenters will host a 30-minute 'information booth' in the Members Lounge for further questions about CLC's. Light refreshments will be provided.

Registration Fees:
This Standard CPD session is offered complimentary to Members and Non-members. Please register early, limited capacity.
