Risk Management

The aim of the Risk Management activities of the Law Society is to reduce the incidence and magnitude of insurance claims against South Australian legal practitioners.

Together with the Ethics and Practice Unit of the Society, Risk Management staff can assist practitioners seeking information and guidance in setting up a new practice, improving the management of an existing one and on various specific matters.

These resources are available free of charge to all practitioners participating in the SA Legal Practitioners Professional Indemnity Insurance Scheme:

  • Practice Visit Program - the main initiative of the Risk Management team, the Practice Visit is an interactive risk management session, held at your office/home office, and tailored to one of your areas of practice. Every insured practice will receive a Practice Visit once every three years.
  • Document Packages - client letters, checklists and other materials in specific practice areas that aim to reduce risk in your practice. Packages available include Cybersecurity, Wills and Estates, Family Law, Commercial, General Law and Personal Injuries.
  • Law & Cyber “Cyber Risk for Law Firms” online course - an interactive course suitable for both lawyers and non-lawyers, providing up-to-the-minute education about cyber risk and email fraud. Please contact the Risk Management team who will forward you the registration details.
  • Riskwatch - a risk-focussed article published each month in the Bulletin and sent directly to your inbox (sign up via your profile in ‘My Subscriptions’).

These are available to all practitioners:

  • CPD sessions / seminars – run regularly at the Law Society and available in person and by webinar, these sessions have been developed with a view to engage and inform practitioners on areas common to claims. The program provides a range of topics to assist practitioners in their own professional practice to reduce risk.
