Why are the Essential Eight essential?

If you've read anything about cyber security in Australia any time in the last few years you've probably seen the Essential Eight mentioned. Many people are aware of the Essential Eight, your organisation may already be trying to achieve a certain maturity level, you may have read the ACSC guidelines. But what is actually so important about the Essential Eight? Why are they considered essential for security? There's a lot of information on WHAT to do and HOW to do it but we will explain WHY.



About the Presenter:


Matthew is a cyber security professional with over decade of career experience covering incident management, systems engineering, and security architecture. Heavily involved in local cyber security education and awareness, he can usually be found loudly sharing opinions at security conferences and industry group catch ups. Matt prides himself on being accessible and is always happy to help you grow your understanding of cyber security concepts in terms that anybody of any background will be able to understand. Having previously managed the IT infrastructure of large enterprise at an executive level, Matt is well versed in communicating with users, management, and board members - if you are frustrated and struggling to express the real-world value of cyber security initiatives and investments to your staff or leaders, he can help. With a strong background in the Microsoft cloud, Matt is an officially certified Microsoft Azure security engineer and Microsoft 365 security administrator having led the deployment and management of Microsoft security controls and device management solutions across environments scaling from dozens to thousands of users from local Adelaide small/medium businesses up to international enterprise.

Cancellation and Payment Terms: Registration fee payment is required in full at the time of registration. Previously paid registrations are transferable subject to the alternate attendee being eligible to register at the same registration fee (that is a practitioner who is not a Society member is not eligible to attend in place of a member without the price differential having been paid. Any person who has registered and paid to attend an event but is subsequently unable to do so and does not wish to transfer the registration is able to apply to the Society for a refund, however such refunds (in whole or in part) will be at the discretion of the Law Society subject to the circumstances and any external costs paid by the Society which cannot be recovered by us. Where there are event specific cancellation and/or payment terms published, those terms override any conflicting terms specified here.
MCPD Units: Any MCPD Units listed are only provided as a guide and attendees must satisfy themselves about the nature and quantity of MCPD Units they can claim for the activity. Please refer to the MCPD Guidelines for details at www.lawsocietysa.asn.au/mcpd
