2 CPD units in Practice Management/Professional Skills

People with personality disorders approach conflict differently—without self-restraint. Legal systems must understand them to make their lives better and society safer. The answers are not to be found in wasted efforts to give those with personality disorders more insight into themselves nor more opportunities for venting in court. The sooner we learn that the answers lie in giving them more structure (with empathy, attention and respect), while setting firm limits on their high-conflict behavior from the start, the better off everyone will be.

The first half of this course provides basic information about narcissistic personality disorder, as well as common ways that narcissists manipulate professionals and blame them for their own failures. They often have predictable behavior problems. Their common court and negotiation behaviors will be addressed, as well as ways to spot them early in a case. The second half of the course addresses ways of managing narcissists as clients and as opposing parties, in court and in negotiations. The problem of dealing with narcissistic professionals is included. Case examples are provided of dealing with narcissists in and out of court.
