Land Use in Property Tax and the Role of the Valuer-General

1.5 CPD Units in Professional Skills

Presenter: Katherine Bartolo - Valuer-General
Chair: Will Fennell, Piper Alderman

The Valuer-General is an independent statutory officer responsible for the delivery of regular and accurate general valuations for rating and taxing purposes.  To assist in this valuation task she identifies the predominant use of the land and determines a Land Use Code for more than 910,000 taxable assessments in the State.  Various rating authorities utilise these Land Use Codes to assist then in the administration of their taxing statutes, such as Emergency Services Levy, Council rates and qualifying land for stamp duty purposes

This session outlines where and how land use plays a part in property based taxation and the role the Valuer-General plays in the process.  It also explains the Valuer-General Land Use Codes and explores the decision making in determining the predominant Land Use Code for a property.

The session will also discuss the process to query the Valuer-General’s Land Use Codes and objections to land use.
