A panel discussion on pro bono work coming from different perspectives.  They will discuss what pro bono actually means, some practical examples of how pro bono is delivered and its significant value in serving our community. They will also talk about various skills and practical guidance in implementing pro bono practices for firms.

Alice Rolls is the Head of Policy & Strategy at the Australian Pro Bono Centre.  Alice will overview pro bono in a national context.  She will discuss its role in the profession and society, and how SA compares nationally.  She will also unpack what 'pro bono' actually means.

Rebecca Ross is the CEO and Principal Solicitor at JusticeNet SA, an independent, not-for-profit legal service for South Australians who cannot afford a lawyer or get the legal help they need elsewhere. Rebecca will discuss practical examples of how pro bono is delivered, and the skillset required of a pro bono lawyer.  She will also provide examples of the impact it makes for pro bono clients, and discuss the role of JusticeNet and how individuals / firms can get involved.

Josh Simons is a partner of national law firm Thomson Geer, and a former Law Society Justice Award recipient for his involvement in pro bono activities.  Josh will discuss the experience of delivering pro bono assistance from a firm perspective, including benefits to individual lawyers, benefits to the firm, and the growing requirement to have pro bono as an integrated part of commercial firms.  Josh will also provide practical guidance in implementing and administering pro bono practices for firms, including how to manage risk when providing assistance in areas outside of a firm's area of expertise.

The panel discussion will be chaired by Margaret Castles, a Senior Lecturer at University of Adelaide Law School and Director of the Clinical Legal Education Program.
