Statement

Vale: Sir Anthony Mason
19 March 2026

The Law Society of South Australia is saddened by the passing of Sir Anthony Mason AC KBE GBM KC, one of Australia’s most distinguished jurists and a towering figure in the law.

Sir Anthony served on the High Court of Australia for 23 years, including as Chief Justice from 1987 to 1995.

As Chief Justice, Sir Anthony presided over matters that had a transformative effect on the law and which reflected contemporary Australian values. Under his stewardship, the High Court delivered landmark decisions that shaped fundamental areas of law, including native title, administrative law, and constitutional interpretation. Notable examples include the recognition of the implied constitutional right to freedom of political communication in Australian Capital Television v Commonwealth, and the recognition of native title in Mabo v Queensland (No 2).

Sir Anthony also contributed significantly to public life through his involvement in legal education, arbitration, and international legal work.

The Law Society extends its sincere condolences to Sir Anthony’s family, friends and colleagues.
