President's Charity

It has become tradition for each Law Society President to nominate a 'President's Charity' for the length of their term. Throughout the year, the Law Society holds events and fundraisers for the charity and Law Society staff are given the option to participate in 'Casual Fridays' each work week with a gold coin donation to the charity.

In 2024, the Law Society President, Alex Lazarevich, has chosen Hutt St Centre as his charity.

Hear from Alex why he has chosen Hutt St Centre

"I am delighted to announce that The Hutt St Centre will be the President’s Charity Partner this Year.

It has been well documented that homelessness is on the rise, and with cost-of-living pressures showing no signs of abating, it is likely that homelessness will continue to impact thousands of South Australians.

The 2021 Census suggested that homelessness increased by 19.3% in five years. Many people become homeless due to factors such as family abuse, violence, mental health issues, poverty, or drug addiction. Most homeless people are extremely vulnerable.

Many people who are homeless need assistance to get out of that situation, and that’s where the Hutt St Centre plays such a vital role.

The Centre provides a number of services to homeless people. Some of those are run on a volunteer basis and require the assistance of donations. The Centre itself helps with immediate needs like showers and meals, but also offers services including medical checkups, financial counselling, help with finding suitable accommodation, recreational activities, and legal assistance.

Everyone has the right to basic shelter and privacy, and that’s why I believe the Hutt St Centre is such a valuable charity that should receive the support it needs to provide services to some of our community's most vulnerable people to help them get into appropriate housing.

I encourage Members to get involved in activates such as their ‘Walk a Mile in my Boots’ event or consider donating non-perishable food, backpacks, sleeping bags or towels.

The Society will be hosting fundraisers for the Hutt St Centre during the year. Stay tuned for information about these events.

About the Hutt St Centre

Hutt St Centre is a place of connection and support, where people facing homelessness are empowered to rebuild their lives, rediscover their identities and reconnect with those who love them. We walk alongside people on their journey toward 'homefulness'—a word we use to describe the feeling of safety, control and confidence that comes with having a place to call home.

When people walk through our doors, we help fulfil their immediate needs, like a shower, a meal, and a charged phone, while our 20+ visiting services provide support ranging from medical check-ups to financial counselling. And with a focus on the future, we connect people with housing, education and employment opportunities to build the skills and confidence to change their circumstances for good.

We believe in a society that grants all people an equal chance to live a full life. And until that happens, Hutt St Centre will continue to be the voice for systematic change. Through our active advocacy, our fundraising initiatives, our unrelenting support and our culture of ingrained respect, we are bringing an end to the injustice we see in our city.

Services available

We provide a range of services to help people fulfil their immediate and longer-term needs, supporting their journey to 'homefulness', including:
