Navigating Disability Considerations for Clients and Courts
Friday, 30 August 2024 | 12:00pm - 1:30pm | By Webinar only
1.5 CPD units (Practice Management/Business Skills)

Presenter: Danielle Gilby, Dentons

This session will explore disability in the courtroom and legal system and the realities faced by those with disability in these spaces, from someone who is all too familiar with those realities, to facilitate an open discussion on how we as practitioners can do better.

You will learn this:
  • Outlining the realities of disability for those accessing or working in the legal system (with particular emphasis on clients but also for professionals), with reference to case studies.
  • Outlining the discriminatory nature of those realities and how they intersect with our ethical obligations as practitioners.
  • What is currently available to help navigate the court and legal systems, and what is missing from those processes.
  • Brief outline of the key changes and observations set out by the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability in so far as they will likely affect solicitors and their core client groups going forward.
