The independent South Australian Law Reform Institute (SALRI), based at the University of Adelaide Law School, has recently conducted a major review of the role and operation of suppression orders in South Australia. Following extensive research and consultation, it released its final report in May 2024: Stemming the Unstoppable Tide? An Evaluation of the Role and Operation of ‘Suppression Orders’ in South Australia (Report No. 19). The report makes 17 recommendations and is currently with the state government for consideration. This session will provide an overview of the report’s findings and recommendations.

In this session, you will learn:
  • the findings from the final report following extensive research and consultations
  • recommendations provided by SALRI to the state government
  • overview of law reform in general

The session will be a panel presentation. This CPD will be of potential interest to any legal practitioner with an interest in suppression orders. Suppression Orders impact both criminal and civil practice. They have long been and continue to be a contentious area of law. They are frequently the subject of comment and/or debate in the media, by the public and in politics.
