With increased disclosures of personal information and its collection being valued by businesses, privacy and the security of personal information continues to be an ever-present concern.

This presentation will discuss the laws and principles governing privacy in Australia generally, notifiable data breaches, cross-border disclosures as well as developments in privacy law. In particular, the recently released discussion paper and the proposals to give individuals a direct right of action for breach of privacy and a statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy will be considered.
