Disaster Relief & Recovery Assistance
In 2009 hundreds of legal practitioners volunteered legal support and
assistance through the Bushfire Legal Help Service to individuals,
families and communities affected by the Victorian bushfires. A similar
number provided assistance following the floods in Queensland floods in
2011.
The Law Society of South
Australia is coordinating offers of legal assistance from individual
practitioners and firms as part of its role in preparing a response to
be followed in the event of a large scale disaster in this state.
This follows the preparation of a paper entitled Emergency Preparedness
and Disaster Planning for the Legal Profession in Australia and the
subsequent formation of a committee with representatives of the
Society, the Legal Services Commission, the South Australian
Attorney-General's Department, Justicenet and the Central Community
Legal Service.
Members are encouraged to register their offer of legal assistance by clicking here.
